~~GUEST POST~~

~~What is the significance of the Tortoise GO in the novel Dominion? What dimension does he add to the Taylors Character?~~

goIn Dominion, my heroine, Taylor, has a pet box tortoise named Go. I’ve been asked if there was any special significance to this choice.

By the time we meet Taylor, she’s an adult and has no memory of how she acquired Go. She only knows that she’s had him “years and years.”  She remembers her mother doubting she could keep him alive, but that’s all.

Authors often have a lot of backstory about their character that never makes it into the manuscript and Go’s story is one of them. As a very young child, Taylor found the tortoise one afternoon while out with her mother and was enchanted by the way he ducked his head inside his shell and peeked out at her.

She begged her mother to be allowed to keep him, and her mother allowed it because her daughter had so few things in life to bring her joy.  I imagined how Taylor’s giggles must have made her smile, but made her heart ache, too, because she heard that sound so infrequently.

Taylor named him “Go” because that’s what she used to say to him when she tried to coax him to come out of his shell to eat the bugs she’d caught for him.

Because of Taylor’s circumstances, a box tortoise is just about the only pet she’d be able to keep, because she could feed him insects and vegetation that wouldn’t deplete her own food resources.

There wasn’t an intentional symbolism, but I suppose Taylor is a bit like a tortoise herself, with a hard “shell” that Dylan struggles to find a way through. She closes herself off from the rest of the world to protect her vulnerable heart.

~~SUMMARY~~

A generation has passed since the pandemic known only as the Infection ended the world as we know it. In a little town in the Appalachian Mountains, Taylor has known only a harsh and brutal struggle for survival in a land littered with the rusted-out remnants of a lost world. By day, she labors in a coal mine. In the evenings, she tends a secret collection of beehives, and uses the honey to pay for lessons in survival skills, such as hunting, fishing and collecting herbs. Her home is a single room in a crumbling old motel, and her only companion is a pet box tortoise named Go she’s had since she was a child.

When her town is destroyed by a vicious gang of raiders known as the Nine, Taylor escapes with Dylan, the son of the mayor. Their only plan is to head south and escape the Nine’s vast territory, avoiding areas contaminated by meltdowns and industrial pollution where mysterious illnesses plague the residents.

Dylan has never known hunger or hardship and struggles to learn survival skills. He’s never known a woman like Taylor either. He tries to pay her back by teaching her to read and telling her the stories passed down from the world of Before.

They certainly didn’t plan on falling in love. Taylor fights it every step of the way, because in her world, any emotional attachment is dangerous. She’s been taught since childhood that love slows you down, makes you weak. But the feelings growing between them cannot be denied.

Taylor finds herself slowly breaking every one of her hard-learned rules of survival. She discovers that perhaps some of those things she’s always fought to avoid are the very things that make life worth living.

~~EXCERPT~~

She woke to the sound of screams and gunfire.

Taylor sat up, looking around her darkened room, holding her breath as she listened. For a moment, all she heard was the pounding of her own heart, and then there was another shriek, this one not far away. Taylor rolled out of her bed and crouched low, heading for the window. She used the side of her fist to rub away some of the grime that coated the glass on the inside, though the outside was still clouded so all she could see was an ominous orange glow and wavering shadows.

Oh shit, oh shit.

Feet pounded down the sidewalk in front of her room, and the shadowy outline of human forms darted past her windows. Someone was crying, horrible sharp sobs.

Taylor crept to the other side of the window where a hole had been broken out of one of the panes. She slowly pulled out the rag stuffed in the gap and peered through. A body lay in the parking lot outside her window, and she smothered a gasp by pressing a hand to her mouth. The bloodied head was turned away from her, but she recognized the tangle of blond curls and the green sweatpants the body wore. It was Grace, and she was dead.

Tears burned in Taylor’s eyes, but she forced them down, swallowing hard. A loud bang drew her gaze, and she saw a man with a rifle kick in the door of a room on the opposite side of the parking lot. He charged in and emerged seconds later, dragging a kicking and screaming woman by her hair.

Time to go. Taylor didn’t know what was going on, but she could figure that out later.

Intimate Betrayal Excerpt

“Hey, just the man I want to see.” Sori sliced his hand through the air toward the beautiful redhead beside him. “Kindise this is Jaden Valenti.”

He mentally retrieved his chin from the floor as Sori turned toward him, finishing introductions he needn’t finish.

“Jaden meet Kindise Wyatt.” He twisted back to the woman and made a dramatic bow at the waist, concluding. “Welcome to our home.”

Her genuine smile caused a familiar tickle deep in Jaden’s chest. Seeing her expression up close revealed she was more enchanting than any thirty-foot surveillance could show. Nursing the pain of a bullet graze on his left side, he took his time standing but opted out of walking over to shake her hand. Not because his wound prevented him from moving, but because he knew if he got too close, the temptation to kiss her delectable mouth would be overpowering. How many times had he fantasized about her full lips, their warmth, their softness, and their sweet taste? He dreamed of her too many times to count, and now here she stood.

“Jaden?” Sori’s verbal prodding drew him back to the moment.

“Huh? Oh. I’m sorry.” He shook his amorous thoughts about the silkiness of her hair free and bowed his head. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kindise.”

“It’s kind of you both to allow me to stay here.”

Her glimpse was too fleeting. It barely landed on him before shooting back to Sori. It was the first time he heard her voice; it was as sexy as hell’s temptation and as seductive as the woman herself. If he could only reach out to caress her cheek, while enjoying the depth of those amazing eyes. The deep color was breathtaking, nearly paralyzing him where he stood when she looked back at him. Wait! What did she say? She’s staying here? He straightened just a little taller.

A soft chuckle escaped her, capturing his heart as the sight of her had so long ago. Her thick lashes danced between him and Sori as she spoke. “I promise my intrusion on your privacy won’t be long.”

His pulse pounded through his body. Light dew dampened his palms. Rapid puffs of air exited his lungs on silent billows. This was fate playing out her hand, and rewarding him for the sacrifice he’d made to keep Kindise alive. Fate brought her back to him.

Her deep mellow tone stirred something buried inside him as she said, “as soon as I find–“

“That’s what we wanted to talk to you about.” Sori placed the basket he held on the floor near the kitchen, before taking Kindise’s arm, guiding her toward the sofa where Jaden had been resting.

Holy Christ, I can’t sit next to her. The gentle-sweet smell of her perfume

accosted him as he stepped out of the way and headed for the kitchen. Glancing back, he saw Sori turn with raised hands that spoke his silent question. He answered as if he’d been verbally asked. “I’m going to get our guest something to drink.”

“I’ve seen to her needs.”

Jealousy tainted his thoughts. Yeah, well you better not have seen to all of them, my Fae friend.

“Come sit down, we need to talk to you.”

Summary

Kindise Wyatt escapes her Star Rider captor and returns to Earth. With the help of a sexy Old World Mole and his mysterious friend, she’s determined to uncover the whereabouts of her lover. Instead, she finds nothing but betrayal and her captor in pursuit.

On the lam after betraying his evil ruler, ex-Dirt Dweller and drifter Jaden Valenti confirms his name is on a hit list. Finding what he believes will be safety amongst the Airbornes, he recreates himself and hides his past until trouble walks back into his life in

the name of Kindise Wyatt, the woman he was ordered to assassinate and didn’t.

Due to the obsessions of a Fae woman Sori gave up his hard-earned royal title and left his homeland of Elfame. Love is the furthest thing from his mind until he is sent in Jaden’s place to pick-up some cargo…human cargo in the form Kindise Wyatt. He feels the Fae magnetism of his soulmate in her. Problem is; she’s in love with someone else.

Will Jaden fulfill his orders to kill Kindise and get his name removed from the list, or will his secret be exposed and betray the friendship he has with Sori? Does Sori help Kindise find her lover, or will a love between them have a chance to flourish before a fatal

This standalone sequel to The Partition of Africa invites you to examine your thoughts on family, desire, and the nature of love itself.

TMP 5

Advance Praise for The Marshall Plan:

“Molly Marshall. . .is probably the most relatable character I have ever come across. For anyone who has ever doubted themselves [or] found themselves unsatisfied with the life they’re living. . .I think you’ll love Molly, too. This book is almost as good as a therapy session, without the awkward, ‘So, how does that make you feel?’ question. It’s a contemporary tale that speaks to any age or stage of life.

TMP 4

“The writing style is easy to digest, leaving the reader free to enjoy the story that unfolds. I have long admired the author for her presence in the writing community, and reading her work has only served to deepen that admiration. Though not my usual read, I can wholeheartedly give this the 5 stars it deserves.” –Angel Leya, Goodreads Reviewer

He’s wrong for her on every level, but she can’t stay away. They enter an affair that threatens everything Hattie holds dear, causing her to question her very identity. All actions have consequences, and this is no exception. The heart wants what it wants. . .but what if the heart is wrong?

Excerpt

This scene is from the opening part of the book.

Deep in the shadows outside a ruined warehouse, Senth Antonello shoved back the hood of his sensor-blocking cloak and fanned himself. The Thieves’ Guild tech let him hide from copbot scans, but it didn’t cool him. Sweat beaded on his skin. Using his fangs, he unfastened first one glove, then the other, and peeled them off. He tucked them into one of dozens of hidden pockets in the cloak, and wiped his face.

The faint sound of gang chant carried in the chilled night air. Gangs in the Crooktown District hunted mixed breeds like him. At first glance, Senth appeared human, but with his catlike eyes and fangs, no one could miss his Kin nature. In moonlight, his eyes would glow.

The chant grew louder, along with the sound of breaking glass. The deeper darkness that followed meant two things: another streetlight had met its end, and that gang was closer than Senth had thought.

“You come down here, I skin you.” Senth flattened himself against the brick wall. “I skin you, the Grand Master skins me. Let’s do each other a favor, huh, boys?”

Worse, the Grand Master would inform Senth’s Sen’dai. His guild master. The crime lord all the other crime lords feared. The Man. The Harbinger. Luc Saint-Cyr.

The Guild didn’t accept non-humans, unless they were enslaved to a human member. No one could rise past level ten, unless related to a human member. Guild-arranged marriages and adoptions happened regularly. To keep the Guild happy, Saint-Cyr was Senth’s lord and master and his adoptive father.

No way Senth wanted the Man angry with him. The last time, he’d almost…

Senth shook off the thought, drew his hood forward again, and edged around the corner into a darker alley. “Ffffftt!” The Kin cuss word hissed past his fangs. Where was Khyff? He had to be close. Senth had looked for hours. His HalfKin sense of smell caught a faint whiff of male, mixed with… He took another sniff. Someone–or something—else.

Pressed against the wall, Senth slipped around a corner, and hunkered down. He melted into the concealing darkness behind a barrel, and narrowed night-sensitive eyes.

His human half-brother leaned against the opposite wall of the trash-strewn alley. Khyffen Antonello’s blond hair shone in the muted light. A female pinned him, arms around his neck. She tore open Khyff’s shirt and ran her hands over his chest.

Senth folded himself into the tight space behind the barrel and settled in to wait. Protection of his brother went before any assignment. Family came first. At least tonight.

Senth’s mother had died after birthing him. Khyff, who’d been three, had been told Senth was dead, and Khyff had been sold into slavery. Neither of them knew the other lived until a month ago. Neither had a clue about their biological fathers. Until Khyff found him, Senth’s “family” consisted of the Man.

Pulling out a square of paper, Senth angled it to catch the dim light and read the words he’d copied from Saint-Cyr’s note once more. You and Khyffen meet me at The Ghost. I have a job for you. Do it and I’ll buy and free your brother, but it’s going to cost you.

Of course it would. The Man didn’t do anything for free. But if it got Khyff out of that hellhole, Senth would do it. He tucked away the note, and slipped on his gloves.

Senth’s master had raised him to believe that no one should have to sell his body to survive. Saint-Cyr owned one slave, Senth, and only so he could rise within the Guild.

Senth and Saint-Cyr might not agree on much, but they both believed Khyff needed his freedom. But with Khyff’s record, freeing him wouldn’t be cheap, and it wouldn’t be easy.

Excerpt

This scene is between Khyff and his brother Senth, and Senth’s fiancé NarrAy. They are discussing a Kin female. Kin are feline humanoids, and Senth is a mix of Kin and human. It begins with Senth speaking.

“Khyff, I think she had a thing for you, Bro.”

Khyff snorted. “Like I’d ever want a mangy Kin.”

“Mangy?” Senth’s brows lowered. “Did you forget who you’re talking to?”

NarrAy moved out from between them and around to the other end of the island.

“We’ve been over this, Sen.” Khyff heard the impatient ring in his own voice and tried to curb it, without success. Fatigue clawed at his reserves of energy. “You look almost human. Why do you want to be accepted by those animals, anyway?”

“Kin aren’t animals, Khyff. We’ve been over that, too.”

“Yes, they are.” He fought the rage threatening to strangle his thoughts. “They tried to kill you the minute you were born. They didn’t want you. They hated you on sight.”

“You mean you hated me, Khyff. You didn’t want me.” Senth stood, shoving the stool out of the way. “If it weren’t for me being a half-breed, your mother might still be alive.”

Our mother.” He leaped to his feet. “She cried over you for days when the Kin stole you from her. Nothing I said or did made any difference.” Khyff braced both hands on the counter. “I was a child, Sen. I couldn’t help her, but I didn’t know that then. I thought it was my fault. All I knew was because of you, they threw us out, and Mama wouldn’t stop crying. She abandoned me because of you.”

NarrAy gasped and covered her mouth, eyes welling with tears. “Oh, Khyff. I’m so sorry you were hurt like that.”

All the strength drained out of him, taking the anger with it. He sat.

Senth slid a hand across the table and touched the tips of his fingers to Khyff’s. With a male economy of words, that expressed enough. Both forgave.

NarrAy sidestepped around the counter and lifted her arms to Khyff for a hug.

He enfolded her in a warm, safe embrace, arms wrapped all the way around her tiny frame. He drew her between his knees and pressed his face against her neck.

Two years before, she’d rescued him after a savage attack that had landed him in the hospital. Since then, he’d allowed no one but her to touch him. Senth got a rare handshake.

He relished the pressure of her gentle arms around him, the rapture of her skin against his. Khyff risked chemical dependence, holding her. Even with short exposure, the touch of a Better addicted. She’d accidentally addicted him once, and he’d suffered while weaning himself. His brother could never leave this woman. Never love another. Senth was hers.

By new laws passed recently, NarrAy must cover her entire body in public. Khyff shouldn’t risk addiction again. Shouldn’t let her touch him. Shouldn’t… He hugged her closer.

Her touch soothed, tranquilized. How anyone could expect a woman as loving as NarrAy to hide from the world? She wasn’t dangerous. Already, the darkness of Khyff’s soul was lifting, evaporating. Fading. How could he have forgotten how wonderful she smelled? How sweet she was? How comforting it was to be held?

The teapot whistled.

“I’ll get it, Khyff.” NarrAy stepped back.

The absence of her touch left Khyff bereft. Dropped him back into his darkness. He turned away. Careful not to let Senth see it, Khyff clutched one hand over his heart.

How I Envision Carly and Justin’s Future

I get letters from the people in my head. I can say that because I’m a writer … and hopefully not sound too crazy.

A book usually starts for me with a voice in my mind, sometimes a little vague and incorporeal, but sometimes as vividly real as if I was standing in the room with another person, looking them straight in the eye as they said, “Hi, I’m So-and-So, and this is my story.” As a writer, it sometimes feels like I’m simply taking dictation from these people, watching their lives play out in my mind like a movie, scrambling to translate the action into words.

Sometimes, it feels as though I work at a small window in some kind of mental DMV. A character will step forward, clutching a ticket with their number, and start to mumble a bit and I’ll listen, only for them to be shoved out of the way by someone else with a stronger, more impatient voice. Sometimes it’s loud and clamorous in that room. Sometimes, it’s quiet and I have to strain to hear a faint whisper. But I’m never alone in this room in my mind. There’s always someone who wants their story told.

After I’ve finished with a book, the characters fade away into the background as another set come forward, impatient to have their turn. Once in a while, one of those old voices will pop up at a quiet moment during my day, and I’ll see what they’ve been up to since the book ended. (The only exception to this is Seth from Ghostwriter. I never heard from him again after the book ended, and I truly do miss hearing his voice in my mind. It was so melodious and poetic. I never quite managed to capture it in my fumbling words. But, I digress…)

I finished Carly and Justin’s story about a year ago, leaving them in what I thought was a good place, prepared to deal with whatever challenges faced them in the future. I moved on to other things, sporadically working on a historical fiction novel.

And just a month or so ago, then I heard a whisper… Justin’s voice in my mind. He told me he’d encountered a traveler, and I might want to hear her story.

It’s twenty-five years later. Conditions in the Wasteland haven’t improved much. As Justin predicted, it’s become a pseudo-feudalistic society where people congregate in towns for protection.

Under Carly and Justin’s leadership, Colby has thrived. It hasn’t been easy. There have been crop failures and losses, but they’ve managed to survive. And their daughter, Dagny… I can’t wait to write about her, because she’s one of those characters who grows stronger in my mind every day, pushing her way to the forefront of my thoughts and demanding her time on the page. She has Carly’s compassion and strength, combined with Justin’s skills and independence. Dagny’s everything you would imagine Justin and Carly’s daughter to be, and more.

I’m hoping you get to meet her soon, and see what’s become of our little walled town.
